Black Point - Stepping Stones

There are not that many places in the world where you can see these unusual rock formations - Black Point in Western Australia is one of the six places in Australia where you can find them.

These columns are formed when the basaltic lava erupts in large volume creating a thick layer, which contracts as it cools down and eventually fractures. The diameter of these columns depends on the rate of cooling - the faster the cooling the smaller the diameter. When the contractional forces are distributed equally in each direction, the columns are likely to take hexagonal shapes.
