Black Point - Stepping Stones
Back to list
There are not that many places in the world where
you can see these unusual rock formations - Black Point in Western Australia is one of the six places in Australia where you can find them.
columns are formed when the basaltic lava erupts in large volume
creating a thick layer, which contracts as it cools down and eventually
fractures. The diameter of these columns depends on the rate of cooling -
the faster the cooling the smaller the diameter. When the contractional
forces are distributed equally in each direction, the columns are
likely to take hexagonal shapes.
